About Keeper of the Plains Classic

Started in 2016, this annual two-day event has quickly grown to 200+ teams every year. This popular event has continued to attract more and more out of region teams.

The event has been named after the famous “Keeper of the Plains” statue by Kowa-Comache artist Blackbear Bosin. The sculpture stands at the confluence of the Arkansas and Little Arkansas rivers in Wichita, KS. This sculpture is adjacent to the Mid-America All-Indian Museum.

Tournament Format

We try to get as many 5-team pools as possible. Teams play a round robin in their pool on Saturday. Play will be from 8:00 am until about 5:00 pm. On Sunday, there is a challenge round followed by single elimination playoffs. Play is scheduled to complete around 4:00 pm on Sunday. If we end up with 4-team pools, there may be some cross-over matches on Saturday afternoon to give teams 4 matches on Saturday.

In 5-team pools, the challenge round and playoffs, play is best 2 out of 3 sets format. First 2 sets to 25 points, starting at 4-4. Third set, if needed, is to 15 points, starting at 0-0.

Some alternate match formats may be used to accommodate for smaller division or pool sizes.

Tie Breaking Procedure

All ties will be broken on paper. There will be no playoff sets played at any time. The order to break ties:

2-way ties: The head to head match result determines the tie-breaker.

3-way ties: 3 Teams have the same MATCH record after pool play (this also applies for 4 team pools where automatic 3 sets are played):
Overall set percentage,
Overall point percentage,
Head to head set percentage,
Head to head point percentage,
Flip a coin

Failure to fulfill officiating assignments will result in the loss of 1 point per minute in their next match.

Officiating

Up referees will be provided for all matches. Teams will be required to provide down referees, line judges and scorekeepers. A rostered coach (head or assistant) has to be the down referee or the scorer for the match.

Failure to fulfill officiating assignments will result in the loss of 1 point per minute in your next match.

All coaches must wear their HOA credentials that is visible at all times. Coaches who do not have a picture on their credentials will have to check in with tournament staff and show a picture ID to get a wristband.
